Lowboy- vs. RGN-Anhänger: Welchen sollten Sie kaufen?

Kurzantwort: An RGN is a type of lowboy. A standard (fixed gooseneck) lowboy is loaded from the rear over ramps; an RGN’s gooseneck detaches so the deck drops to the ground and the machine drives on from the front. Buy a fixed gooseneck lowboy if your machines can climb ramps and you want lower cost and maintenance. Buy an RGN if you haul tall, long or low-clearance machines that cannot use ramps.

Lowboy vs RGN at a glance

Fixed gooseneck lowboy Removable gooseneck (RGN)
Beladung From the rear over ramps or a hydraulic ladder From the front; gooseneck detaches and the deck lowers to the ground
Am besten geeignet für Excavators, loaders and machines that can climb ramps Tall, long or low-clearance machines that cannot climb ramps
Mechanische Komplexität Simple welded structure Hydraulic system and coupling to maintain
Kosten Nach unten Higher, due to the hydraulic gooseneck
Loading time Fast when ramps suit the machine Needs time to detach and re-couple the gooseneck
CHENLU example 3-axle 30-60 t, 4-axle 60-100 t; 13,000 × 3,000 × 1,760 mm 80 t; 16,000 × 3,000 × 2,500 mm; 12 kW diesel engine drives the hydraulics

How a fixed gooseneck lowboy works

The gooseneck is permanently attached to the deck. The machine drives up rear ramps onto the low deck, then is chained down. CHENLU also offers a hydraulic ladder version whose angle adjusts for machines of different heights, which lowers the climbing angle without a removable neck.

How an RGN works

The driver uses the hydraulic system to lift and detach the gooseneck from the deck. The front of the deck lowers to the ground and becomes a drive-on ramp. After loading, the gooseneck is re-coupled and the deck lifted to travel height. On the CHENLU 80 Tonnen abnehmbarer Schwanenhals-Anhänger, a 12 kW diesel engine powers the hydraulics, so the trailer does not depend on the tractor’s hydraulic supply.

When to choose a fixed gooseneck lowboy

  • Your machines are tracked or can climb a ramp safely.
  • You load at depots or sites with space behind the trailer.
  • You want the lowest purchase price and the least maintenance.
  • Your drivers are not trained for gooseneck detaching.

When to choose an RGN

  • Your machines are too tall for the loaded height when using ramps, or have low ground clearance.
  • You haul long machines or components that are awkward to drive up rear ramps.
  • You load at sites with no room for rear ramps.
  • Your fleet earns enough from specialized loads to justify the higher price and maintenance.

A third option: folding gooseneck

A folding gooseneck lowbed folds its neck down to the ground to form a gentle front slope, keeping the neck attached. It offers front loading for heavy equipment. See all types in Types of Lowbed Trailers.

Checklist before you buy

  1. List your heaviest and tallest machines with weight, length, width and height.
  2. Add the deck height to the machine height and check it against bridges and power lines on your routes.
  3. Check whether each machine can climb a ramp safely.
  4. Confirm axle-load and gross-weight limits in your country to choose 3 or 4 axles.
  5. Compare purchase cost with how often you will need front loading.

Lowboy vs RGN FAQ

Is an RGN a lowboy?

Yes. An RGN is a lowboy whose gooseneck can be removed. “Lowboy” alone usually means a fixed gooseneck lowboy.

Which is cheaper, a lowboy or an RGN?

A fixed gooseneck lowboy usually costs less, because it has no hydraulic gooseneck system. CHENLU confirms factory-direct pricing on inquiry.

Which carries more weight?

Capacity depends on axles and structure more than on the gooseneck type. CHENLU fixed gooseneck lowboys are rated 30-100 tons by axle count; the 80 ton RGN is rated 80 tons.

Does an RGN need a special tractor?

Not on CHENLU’s 80 ton RGN: its own 12 kW diesel engine powers the hydraulics. The tractor must still be rated for the loaded combination weight.

Can I add a hydraulic ladder instead of buying an RGN?

Often, yes. A hydraulic ladder lowers the loading angle on a fixed gooseneck lowboy. If the machine still cannot climb safely, choose an RGN.
