Was ist ein RGN-Tieflader? Abnehmbare Schwanenhals-Tieflader erklärt

Kurzantwort: RGN stands for removable gooseneck. An RGN trailer is a lowboy (lowbed) semi trailer whose gooseneck, the front section that couples to the tractor, can be detached. With the neck removed, the front of the deck becomes the loading point, so excavators, dozers and other machines drive on from the front instead of climbing rear ramps. RGNs are used for heavy, tall, long or low-clearance equipment.

What does RGN mean?

RGN is short for removable gooseneck. You will also see the same trailer called a detachable gooseneck trailer, a detachable gooseneck lowbed or an RGN lowboy. All of these names describe one design: a low-deck semi trailer with a gooseneck that separates from the deck for front loading.

How does an RGN trailer work?

  1. Park and lower: the driver parks on firm, level ground and uses the trailer’s system to lower the front of the deck.
  2. Detach the gooseneck: the neck is unlocked and separated from the deck. The tractor pulls forward with the neck still coupled.
  3. Drive on: the front of the deck now rests at ground level and acts as a ramp. The machine drives onto the low deck from the front.
  4. Re-couple: the tractor reverses, the neck is reconnected and locked, and the deck is raised to travel height.
  5. Secure the load: the machine is chained or strapped down before the trailer moves.

How the neck is lifted and detached depends on the build. Some RGNs use hydraulics powered by the tractor; others carry their own power unit. On the CHENLU 80 Tonnen abnehmbarer Schwanenhals-Anhänger, a 12 kW diesel engine drives the hydraulics.

Main parts of an RGN trailer

Bauteil What it does
Abnehmbarer Schwanenhals Couples to the tractor’s fifth wheel; detaches to open the front of the deck
Low deck (well) Carries the machine as low as possible to keep the loaded height down
Rear deck and axle group Sits over the axles and carries the rear of the load
Lifting system Raises and lowers the deck front when the neck is detached or re-coupled

What does an RGN trailer carry?

  • Excavators, bulldozers, wheel loaders and graders
  • Mining machinery and drilling rigs
  • Long machines or components that are awkward to drive up rear ramps
  • Machines with low ground clearance that would ground out on a ramp
  • Tall equipment that needs the lowest possible deck to stay under bridges and power lines

RGN trailer dimensions

There is no single standard size. Deck length, width and height are set by the machines you haul and the road rules where you operate. These are the layouts of CHENLU RGN models:

Modell Gesamtlänge Breite Niedriges Deck Deckhöhe Achsen
3 Axle RGN 15,000 mm (16,495 mm longer build) 2,600 mm 6,000 mm (7,500 mm longer build) 850 mm 3
80 Ton RGN 16,000 mm 3,000 mm To order To order 3 or 4
100 Ton 4 Axle RGN 18,000 mm 3,500 mm (4,000 mm with extensions) 7,700 mm level 900 mm 4

A deck wider than your country’s standard road width usually needs an oversize permit. Check width, height and axle-load limits for your route before you order.

RGN vs lowboy vs step deck

RGN (removable gooseneck) Tieflader mit festem Schwanenhals Stufendeck
Beladung From the front, neck detached From the rear over ramps From the rear or by crane
Deckhöhe Am geringsten Low Higher than a lowboy
Am besten geeignet für Heavy, tall or low-clearance machines Machines that climb ramps safely Lighter equipment and general cargo
Cost and upkeep Am höchsten Nach unten Am geringsten

How many axles does an RGN need?

Axle count follows the machine weight and the axle-load limits on your route, not the trailer name. As a starting point, mid-weight excavators and loaders often travel on a 3-Achs-RGN, while large excavators and mining machines need four axles or more, such as the 100-Tonnen-4-Achs-RGN. The final rating also depends on where the machine sits on the deck and on the tractor.

Advantages and limits of an RGN

Advantages

  • Front loading with no ramp climb, which suits long and low-clearance machines
  • The lowest deck height, giving more room for tall cargo
  • Loading where there is no space behind the trailer

Limits

  • Higher purchase price than a fixed gooseneck lowboy
  • More parts to maintain: the neck coupling and lifting system
  • Detaching and re-coupling takes time and needs a trained driver

RGN trailer FAQ

What does RGN stand for in trucking?

Removable gooseneck. It is a lowboy trailer whose front gooseneck detaches so equipment can be loaded from the front.

Is an RGN the same as a lowboy?

An RGN is a type of lowboy. “Lowboy” on its own usually means a fixed gooseneck lowboy that loads from the rear.

Is a detachable gooseneck trailer the same as an RGN?

Yes. Detachable gooseneck, removable gooseneck and RGN describe the same design.

How much can an RGN trailer carry?

It depends on the axle count, the structure and local axle limits. CHENLU RGN models range from 3 axle builds rated per order to a 100 ton target payload on four axles.

Why choose an RGN over a fixed gooseneck lowboy?

Choose an RGN when your machines are long, have low ground clearance or cannot climb rear ramps safely, or when the loading site has no room behind the trailer.
